History of pop video

From Bing to the Beatles:

1940's: Bing Crosbry was a famous 20th century world star, famous for his bass-baritone voice. His singing style was so good it later influenced many other popular singers, but the only ways his fans could see him was in films. For an example White Christmas.

Although in the 1950's Bing Crosby was replaced by Frank Sinatra who was a young talent which the girls loved compared to other famous singer who were mostly older. Frank began he career in the swing era, this is where he found his success.  Frank Sinatra  is still one of the best  selling artists of all time, as he has sold more than 150 million records worldwide.

However, Elvis was the birth of Rock and Roll. He was one of the first to popularise rock and uptempo songs, which he mixed with country and rhythm&blues. He later became a leader of rock and roll in the 1956 with a number one hit. His way of dancing which was energised and sexually provocative made him controversial and popular.
An example of his music is in the film Blue Hawaii.

1960's the Beatles were the first to make pre-music videos  that were popular. In 1966 they were sick of touring due to their fans screaming so loud and the music not being heard. Which lead to 'Top of the pops' being aired on BBC1 so that British fans could see their music.
Rather than appearing live the also made short films to promote their double record 'paperback writer' and 'rain' . This was the first  pop video ever, and also the lyrics also echoed their lyrics.

Foo fighters - The Pretender

We as a class had to watch around 40 seconds of the Foo fighters - The pretender music video. Every time a shot would change, no matter how quick it was, we would draw it and write down how long the shot lasted. We then took pictures of each individual shots we drew and uploaded it into Adobe Premiere to make our animatic. A video of the actual song and the music video was put into the bottom right side of the animatic, so we could use the seconds to sync the music with the drawing timings.

We learnt how to use Adobe Premiere as well as how to precisely sync music to a video without the sound messing up. As some of the shots were about 1.5 seconds, which could have made it harder to sync the aniamtic with the music.

Editing a  music video is harder then editing a thriller. As with a thriller the video and sound is already attached together so its quicker and easier to edit. While with a music video the video and the sound is recorded separately. This means that the sound and video would have to be synced later while editing which is harder than editing a thriller.

Types of music

Artist can be split into two different categories.

Organic - Used to describe to describe bands where the music comes first. Then they may be signed by a record label.

Synthetic - X factor methodology and it is the record label that drives them to fame.

The Beatles are an example of an organic music. They were an English band which they formed themselves in Liverpool clubs in the 1960's. Their first hit in the Love Me Do made it in the top charts and made them popular in the UK. Then they later made it in the US charts as the 'British invasion'. They broke up in 1970, although they all had good music careers. The Beatles were the best selling artists in the US with 177 million units. They topped the Billboard and hold the record for the number of number one hits, as well as 10 Grammy awards.

The Monkees are an example of synthetic music. They are a American band that released music in the 60's and 70's. They were made by Robert Rafelson and Bert Schneider for a TV series The Monkees. Which was a TV show about the lives of a band, although it wasn't really successful so then they turned into an actual band and their music began to sell.

Record lables

Advanced portfolio in media

Major record lables:
  • Universal
  • Sony music
  • Warner brothers
  • EMI
Majority of the record labels own or license a lot of smaller companies, so that they can reach different types of genres.

For example:

  • Columbia records are an American record label which was founded in 1888, and is under the ownership of Sony Music Entertainment. Many artists are signed to Columbia records from Adele, Beyonce, Celine dion and J.Cole.

  • Syco records was founded in 2002 under the trading name Simco Ltd. Syco records can sign on the winners and finalists of the X Factor and Britain got Talent before any other records. For example One Direction, Olly Murs, Leona Lewis and James Arthur.

  • Virgin records was founded in the 1973 by Richard Branson, Simon Draper, Nik Powell and Tom Newman, which hen grew to be a world wide phenomenon, as they had many platinum artists such as Janet Jackson and Keith Richards. Now they have Bastille and  Ella Eyre.

    • Island records
Island Records is a record label that operates as a division of Universal Music Group. It was founded by Chris Blackwell in Jamaica. It was formerly based in the United Kingdom for many years until 1998. Blackwell sold the label to PolyGram in 1989.

Some of there artists are Enrique Iglesias, Jessie J and Disclosure.

RCA records is an American record label with Sony music entertainment. It is the second oldest record company in US history. It has artists such as Miguel, Alicia Keys, Whitney Houston and Chris Brown.

    • Large numbers of small companies have little or no finical connection to the majors. They specialise in the niches in the industry.
    • Domino Records are highly successful and are independent as they have no major record label behind them.

    Looking for an artist

For a music video to be any good it would have to cover a couple issues.

    1)Where to find artists
    2)Copyright issues
    3)The ideal track
    4)Genres to avoid

It would be hard to find artists,  although there are websites like unsigned.com and Soundcloud which could help me find various artists.  We would have to ask for the artists permission tot use their song, but it would be easy if they aren't signed.

To avoid Copyright issues, i will avoid using well known artist like Adele, Beyonce and Sam Smith. This is due to them being less likely to say yes or even respond to our emails and messages. New bands and solo artists would be easier for our Media music video project.

The music video is not meant to be any longer than 5 minutes but no shorter than 3 minutes. The  music track has to be upbeat with a changing tempo. This is to make the music video different more interesting to listen to.  This will make it easier for the music video visually in music video. It must have enough vocals to show lip syncing and performance.

    Country

Rap normally has explicit language and sexual content

Rap- often contains bad language and sexual references and is hard to lip sync to as the tempo is often very fast. This also makes it hard to learn the lyrics.Country/western- due to the conventional setting of the rural landscape and props/costumes typical to that of a 'cowboy' it is difficult to create a music video this genre effectively. I live in a town with little access to a rural area and being on a small budget it would be hard to get the correct costumes. Dubstep/trance- this genre of music often has little vocals that are highly synthesized/edited. This would mean that my music video would have little performance and the lip syncing would not look as effective as it would for an indie/rock song where the vocals are not edited as drastically.
